Popular Cardiff Steak Restaurant Named as One of the Top 50 in the World

Pasture Cardiff – one of the most popular restaurants in the Welsh capital – has been ranked 48th in the 101 World’s Best Steak Restaurants 2024.

Pasture Restaurants are a celebration of fire-based cooking and incredible local ingredients, coupled with slick, engaging service. The Cardiff restaurant boasts a busy open kitchen which showcases charcoal grills and live fire cooking, and dry aging cabinets displaying whole cuts of beef. The beef is selected from farms in Wales & the South West, all which have been raised on pasture.

Now in its fifth year, the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants is presented by London based Upper Cut Media House and first initiated by Ekkehard Knobelspies in 2019. With headquarters in London and representatives in Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Dubai and New York, has taken on the task of compiling the list of the 101 best steak restaurants; between 700 and 800 restaurants are visited and evaluated each year, from which the best restaurants are selected for the prestigious ranking.

Sam Elliott is the 36-year-old Chef-Owner behind Pasture’s growing portfolio of restaurants; he operates two restaurants in Bristol (his first, Pasture, opened in 2018, and Radius opened last year); two restaurants in Cardiff (a second Pasture, which opened in 2020, and Parallel which opened earlier this year). Next week Sam will open Pasture Birmingham, and in late 2024, Sam will also be opening Prime by Pasture; a butchery, deli, cookery school and burger joint in the Redcliffe Quarter, Bristol. 

Sam said,

“To find out that we are now ranked 48th in the world at our Cardiff restaurant - having climbed 22 places on last year - is absolutely amazing. I am incredibly proud of the whole Pasture team and all of their hard work.”

The top 50 ranking in the 101 World’s Best Steak Restaurants comes hot on the heels of the Pasture Restaurant Group being shortlisted for a Sustainability Award at the National Restaurant Awards in London.

Launched in 2007, the awards celebrate the brilliance and vibrancy of the UK’s eating out scene, and reward the very best chefs, front of house staff and restaurants the country has to offer.

In December 2023, the Pasture Restaurant Group was first recognised for its commitment to sustainability, gaining the top 3* ‘Food Made Good’ Rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), and scoring exceptionally highly in all three categories assessed by the SRA for its ‘Food Made Good’ rating – environment, sourcing and society.

The high rating was attributed to the group’s ‘extensive steps’ to tackle food waste (including composting all inedible food waste in an on-site anaerobic digester), and Pasture’s commitment to using local suppliers who are carefully chosen for their own environmentally sustainable practices.

Additionally, Pasture runs its own farm, Buttercliffe Farm just 2.2 miles from the Bristol restaurant, practicing no dig, permaculture and organic methods, growing a wide variety of veg, fruit, herbs and flowers for the restaurants; the farm also grows micro herbs, allowing Pasture to creatively garnish their dishes without relying on imported produce in plastic packaging.

Pasture will find out whether they will take home the coveted Sustainability Award when the National Restaurant Awards take place in London on Monday 10th June.
