5 Reasons to Visit Cardiff This Christmas

Whether you're planning a festive getaway or looking to shop ‘till you drop, the Welsh capital promises an unforgettable experience this festive season. With less than a month to go until the big day, here are five reasons why you should visit Cardiff this Christmas.

1. The Light of Winter Trail

Whether you arrive in Cardiff by train, bus or car, you’re sure to be greeted by one of the spectacular displays that make up the Light of Winter Trail. New to Cardiff this year, this free trail features 11 light and sound installations that will brighten up your winter.

Highlights include ‘Cardiff Aurora’, a breath-taking light and sound projection onto Cardiff Central Station that runs from 5pm – midnight every evening, ‘Illuminated Reeds Symphony’, an interactive installation on the Churchill Way canal, and stunning festive lights on the entrances to Cardiff’s historic arcades.

The Light of Winter Trail runs until 5th January and trail maps can be downloaded here or picked up from Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Central Station guest services and St David’s Dewi Sant guest services desk.

2. Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland is at the heart of Cardiff’s festive celebrations, occupying two iconic city centre locations, the grounds of Cardiff Castle and City Hall Lawn.

Get your skates on and head to Cardiff Castle’s Ice Rink & Ice Walk, where you’ll be skating inside the historic walls of a Norman castle, before visiting City Hall Lawn to enjoy the Ice Bar, complete with stunning ice sculptures, the Big Wheel, and the Funfair.

With a brand-new tavern in the castle walls and a cozy Alpine Ski Lodge on City Hall Lawn, there are plenty of food and drink options for mulled wine and tasty seasonal treats.

Winter Wonderland is open until 5th January, so there’s plenty of time to soak up the festive spirit. Plan your visit here.

3. Christmas Markets

If you’re on the hunt for a unique gift or simply looking to enjoy some festive treats, Cardiff’s Christmas Market is a must-visit. 2024 marks 30 years of Cardiff’s Christmas Market, so grab a hot chocolate and browse over 70 stalls selling everything from Welsh arts and crafts to seasonal food and drink.

See the list of exhibitors here.

4. Shopping

Cardiff’s shopping scene has it all, from high-end retailers to charming independent stores. Tick off your Christmas list and indulge in some retail therapy at St David’s Dewi Sant with major brands like Pull & Bear and Zara, alongside luxury outlets like Penhaligon’s and Watches of Switzerland.

Cardiff’s historic arcades are also brimming with festive finds and unique stores. We’d recommend dropping by Welcome Things (Royal Arcade), Welsh Connection (Castle Arcade), and Albatross Toys (Morgan Arcade) to find that perfect gift. View the full list of stores in Cardiff’s arcades here.

5. Food and Drink

The festive season is the ideal time to dive into Cardiff’s vibrant food and drink scene. A must-visit in the Welsh capital is Pasture, celebrated as one of the world’s top 50 steak restaurants. The Ivy Asia is another must-stop, their festive set menu and seasonal cocktails will get you in the party spirit!

Cheese lovers can head to Castle Arcade and cheers to the festive season over a delicious charcuterie board at Ty Caws, new to Cardiff this year. Other new foodie spots include Mugshot, Fluffy Fluffy, Terra Mare, Pizza Pilgrims and Giggling Squid.
